Urban gained his PhD in the area of the “Management of sustainability in construction works” in 2009 with is concerned with the various inputs and outputs from a sustainability perspective during the process of construction works. He has worked with sustainability in construction concepts since the early 1990s, initially as a teacher on the Ecological Building Engineer programme at Mid Sweden University, Östersund. Urban was charged with developing the programme until 1996 and finished as the Head of Studies.
After a couple of years working as a consultant in construction and environmental management in Malmö, he continued his education at Lund University in construction management. During these years he also contributed in the world sustainable building conference series starting with the 1998 conference in Vancouver, Canada, continuing in Maastricht, The Netherlands, in 2000, Oslo in 2002 and Tokyo in 2005, Melbourne in 2008 and Helsinki in 2011.
He began his career as a site manager in the mountain area in Sweden at Skanska after he finished his engineering education. In the 1980s, he moved to southern Sweden to become a civil engineer in Lund and then worked as a consultant in construction management in Malmö on housing and commercial projects. Besides work as a consultant, he was an executive and owner of a SME real estate company until 2007 when the company was sold. He is now, besides teaching in the Division, working as a sustainability and environmental consultant in the construction sector and developing a small sustainable business on a rural estate just outside Lund.
His major interest are, besides his family and two hilarious dogs, sports such as football and handball, travelling and malt whiskey tasting.
